How tiles and boxes are counted

The calculator multiplies room area by a waste allowance, divides by the area of one tile, rounds up to whole tiles, then divides by the number of tiles in a box.

Why waste is not optional

Cuts at walls, corners and doorways produce offcuts that cannot be reused. A 10% allowance is normal for a rectangular room; diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns and many small rooms need more.

Who it is for

DIY tilers and anyone checking a quote before ordering pallets.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow?

10% for a straight lay in a simple room, 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts, and more if the room has many corners or you are tiling several small areas.

Should I order by boxes or tiles?

Boxes. Suppliers sell full boxes, and the calculator rounds up so you are not short at the end of the job.

Does it include grout lines?

No. Tile dimensions are treated as the finished face size. For large grout gaps, measure a tile plus one gap, or add the extra to the waste allowance.
